Emergency Scouting for Food, November 2008 - Statistics
The numbers are in and you should be proud of our youth and leaders, because this effort was a record breaker and will make a significant impact on our communities!
If you will remember, the call for assistance in this food drive came only a few weeks ahead of the target collection date. But the need was severe. The food banks were nearly out of food and were facing the distinct possibility of turning people away not just hungry, but also during the holiday season!
Here are the numbers by food bank area. Comparisons to the Spring 2008 Scouting for Food (one of the best to date) are included for comparison purposes. Results in are pounds of food collected:

"This has truly been amazing, " said Myla Dutton, Executive Director of the Community Action Services and Food Bank. "As I said on the phone - I could hear the smiles on [the food bank employee's] faces when I spoke to them about the results."
We are happy to report that the the food banks now have the food necessary to serve those individuals and families who need help throughout the holiday season.
Please share this information with your units and every Scout so that they can see that even small efforts, when done as a part of a larger team, can solve tremendous problems.
Thank you, from the Utah National Parks Council and the Community Action Services and Food Banks throughout Utah!

November Activites

Parents,

Our Wolves are doing so great with all their achievements and awards!! Congratulations to Alec and Nick for earning their Wolf Patch. And to all the boys for finishing their requirements for their Leave-No-Trace Award (to be awarded at next pack meeting) as well as our World Conservation Award. A lot of work went into these and your boys should be so proud.

We are sad to say good-bye to Sister Coletti and thank her for being a great Den Leader. We are also sad that her son Jeffery will be leaving our den.

We will be welcoming Mclain Bement into our den.

As always, please, let me know of any activities that your son has done that would go towards an achievement, a patch, or an award.

GO WOLVES!!!

August Activities

The Wolves have been busy this summer and August has been no exception. Last week we had an AWSOME party and the boys were able to check off alot of stuff. They planned and helped with the party (elective 9). We finally completed the "Cooking and Eating" Achievement 8 that Sister Sannar had started in June. They cooked their own hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill (with a little help). They planted flowers in my planter boxes as well as a seed in a cup (this should be somewhere in your kitchen, hopefully sprouting) - elective 15. We checked off all of elective 7 - Foot Power - this included walking on stilts and cans. They had a ton of fun and I wish I had pictures, but I had misplaced my camera and just found (yeah!!).

This past week we went to the Conservation Garden Park in West Jordan http://www.conservationgardenpark.org/ and the boys got to see all kinds of neat trees and plants, most of them local to Utah and all of them used in a way that helped conserve water. This activity earned them a patch:

http://www.gslc-bsa.org/cubs-webelos/cs-activity-and-trail-patches/garden_water/
This activity also is getting us one step closer to that World Conservation Patch (see past post).
The activities for the month of August also helped each boy to complete his requirements for their Outdoor Activity Patch (see previous post), and their My Hometown Patch. Our
The month of September will be full too. We will be able to finish our Leave No Trace requirements and get that patch. I also have a trip to Cabela's for a fishing lesson planned.
Since school has started, our meeting time will change. Sister Sannar should be getting a hold of each of you to let you know what the new time will be. She is also having the Den Meeting this week in her home. She should be letting all of us know about that as well.
As always..... let either one of us know if your son has completed ANY activities that check off on ANY requirements so that he can get his award.
Be proud of your boys.... they are AWSOME!!!!

You boys did a lot of activities in July and you have earned the following:

Make sure you or your parents get this money to me before Pack Meeting so you don’t miss out on the awards. Make sure to let me know whenever you complete any patch or belt loop requirements so that you can get your award.

Don’t forget about the Highland Fling. Any activity that you participate in completes your Hometown Discovery Patch requirements. You could also receive the Highland City Patch. The Flag Raising Ceremony is at 7:00am and if you are planning on participating you need to be at the flag pole at 6:45am. The parade begins at 10:00am and if you would like to be in it, you need to be at Highland Elementary at 9:30am. You need to be in uniform for both of these activities. Wolf Den 952 visits Highland City Fire Department

Our boys had a wonderful tour through our local fire house. Not only did they get to check out the fire trucks and the ambulance, but Randy, our fire fighter guide took them to all the places no one else gets to see. They saw where the fire fighters sleep, where they work out, where they cook and eat, and where they watch t.v. not to mention "the pole". The Wolves were very well behaved and even left the department with a den yell.

This was a check off in their handbooks (9C) and also goes towards our Hometown Discovery Patch, which we also worked on while we slurped down our Frosty's. Check out the link to see if you have completed any of the other requirements.

http://www.gslc-bsa.org/cubs-webelos/cs-activity-and-trail-patches/hometown/

The invitation to participate in the Highland Fling flag raising ceremony also includes an invitation to participate in the Highland Fling parade. There is a Boy Scout who is doing this activity to earn his Eagle Scout and would like as many Scouts as possible to be involved. I asked the boys if they wanted to go and they said "yes" then "no" then "yes". I will be at the flag raising ceremony and at the parade with my children. If your boys decide to go, I can give you any information that you need.

Our Wolf Den party is scheduled for this Wednesday (7/23) at 1:00pm. The boys will check off their last requirment for Cooking & Eating (8E-cook an outdoor meal) and have some fun checking off some electives. We have been talking about it all month and they are very excited. I will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, condiments and drinks. Brother Price will be here as well and will be bringing the watermelon. Have your boys come in clothes that they can get wet and bring a towel. Please have your boys bring their favorite snack. I am guessing this den meeting will go a little longer, if that's okay.

If you have any questions let me know.

Cub Scout Day Camp 2008

July 9, 2008

Cub Scout Day Camp
What an amazing, fun day for these boys!! The Wolf den and the Bear den went up to Camp Jeremiah Johnson together for a day full of outdoor fun!

Cook's Companions
This is the name of our group of boys that followed our guide from station to
station.

Opening Ceremony
We were a little late getting there so we only caught the tail end....
the boys all running to their first activity

Siege at Sling Shot Slope
Each of our boys got a short lesson in sling shot saftey then... "fire away"
A line of boys aimed across a small creek at a slew of cans and pans and anything that made that "tink" noise when hit.

Raingutter Regatta
The boys got to try their hands at ship building. A block of wood with a mast
and paper sail. Then the fun began. The camp had two raingutters filled with
water, lined up side by side about 2 feet apart and 20 feet long. The boys all
lined up two by, placed their boat in the water and bleeew, racing their boat to the other end of the raingutter. Then back in line they went 'cause they had to do it again.... and again.

Swordsmith Shoppe
After a quick review of basic tools the boys put together their own swords and
were sent off to battle. The whole mass of boys chasing and tagging each
other with their foam sword for the right to be the last man standing.

Arhcery Adventures
Real bows and arrows shot at a target. The boys, again, got a lesson in
saftey and use then a chance to aim and fire. This was followed by a quick
lesson in how to tie knots.

Lunch
Is anybody hungry??? Not really these boys were just getting started and
barley sat down long enough to eat some food. Enough time was left for
them to trek over to the Trading Post and spend all the money they brought
on "treasure".

BB Gun Buccaneers
Next we hit the shooting range. BB guns and goggles all lined up for these very ready little guys. They listened, followed directions and some even hit a few of the targets. Then a game of tag blew off some of their extra energy.

Follow the Stars
Our last stop was a lesson in the stars. Us leaders got to take a break in the shade while the older kids taught our boys a little bit about reading the night sky and naming the planets.

Closing Ceremony
A fun sing-a-long, a patriotic salute while the flag was lowered, and a heart felt thank you from our boys ended this incredible trip.

Sister Bement and I got to watch all of these boys have a really fun day and we are both so glad they all got to come and that we got to come with them. They were all very well behaved and were complimented several times by other leaders.

Be proud of your boys, they are awsome!!!

Wolves of 952 July Patches Info

WOLVES of 952
July 2008

Dear Parents,
We are having so much fun with your boys and hope that they are enjoying Cubs.
It’s summer time and there are so many activities for families to enjoy, I just wanted to let you know about some awards your son can be earning while your family enjoys this time of year.

Our Den is currently working on achievements that will earn them the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award and the Leave No Trace Award

http://www.usscouts.org/usscouts/advance/cubscout/Outdoor-Activity.asp

http://www.usscouts.org/usscouts/advance/cubscout/leavenotrace.asp

Check out these awards, any activity that your son participates in can help him earn these awards and others. September will be a fun month for our Wolves. A hike on a Highland Trail and a service project for keeping it clean will hopefully fulfill our requirements for these two patches.

Thanks for letting us be a part of your sons Cub Scout fun - Sister Neill
